Elk City is about as back in the woods as you can get a community and everyone loves it that way. With an elevation of 4097 its main industry is lumber, Forestry and mining. The town of Florence near here use to have a population of over 10,000 during the gold rush in the 1800s. Believe it or not, people are still making a fair wage along most of the creeks in the area. Every summer they vacation while panning for gold. Elk City has full food, lodging and automotive services and everyone is more than friendly. Red River Hot Springs Resort is just a few miles away. Hunting, camping, snowmobiling are everywhere. This is the last stop on the ol Nez Perce Trail road to Montana. This is the longest unpaved road in the western United States without services. It is 113 miles to Darby, Montana. You can also access the Snake River traveling through Dixie south of here where the famous Buckskin Billy use to live. Find out about his book!
