Elk River started like many others in the area as a Potlatch timber town. Mining in the Nea Hill area attracted more homesteaders. Today the mill is gone but the community is still suported by the timber industry. Fishing and hunting has always been exceptional within this area. There is a lake/reservoir on the east end of town. The hike into Elk Creek falls is a "must see" being the largest in North Idaho. Don't miss the largest cedar tree in North America. In the winter I've always enjoyed cross country skiing on the groomed trails. Snowmobiles are also for rent. It's a great place to spend a holiday! ...and there's almost always live music Friday and Saturday nights that will take you back in time. smile.
