Pomeroy is located on US highway 12, 30 miles west of Clarkston. Here you can enjoy golf, tennis and picnicking by the city park. The Seeley Theater and Opera House now hosts the Pomery Civic Theater. When I stopped here it still had the props from the last play done in the thirties. It takes one back into time.

Pomeroy is the only town I know of that has the same population as the rest of the county in which it resides, and it is the only town! 1800 people live here and that’s the way it was planned. The population of the county and the town hasn’t changed since the twenties. This community chose not to have the railroad go through their town and not to locate WSU here because of the negative changes they would bring. Pullman accepted WSU and the railroad to Lewiston was built along the Snake River Canyon.

The Snake river canyon now hosts Lower Granite Dam and lake which has great fishing along with Alpowa Creek, Pataha Creek and Tucannon River. A 30 minute drive south places one in the Blue Mountains, the oldest is Washington State. Many people come here to fish, snowmobile, x-country ski, pick mushrooms and camp. Check in at the Forest Service Office in Pomeroy for maps and information.

The founding fathers of Pomeroy wanted their private hunting reserve. In the twenties they imported a herd of elk from Yellowstone to populate the Blue Mountains. It worked… this is one of the finest Elk habitat areas in the states of Washington and Oregon. The heard had multiplied over and over and still thrives.

Much of the farming about Pomeroy grows for the Jolly Green Giant cannery in Dayton. Eight miles north east of Pomeroy is the Dye Seen Ranch, the worlds largest marketer of Kentucky Bluegrass Lawn Seed. They imported the most modern tea blending equipment from England to blend their grasses and wholesale to many brands you would recognize such as Scotts. The growing of bluegrass has done much to stop the soil erosion around this region.
